Mardi Gras (or Fat Tuesday) celebrations are held all over the Christian world. While we eat king cakes here in the United States, other countries have their own dessert traditions. In Poland, they eat Pączki. What are Pączki? It’s a filled Polish donut. Many of the ingredients used can not be eaten during the Lent season so many enjoy these tasty treats on Fat Tuesday in the U.S. and Fat Thursday in Poland. Tłusty Czwartek or Fat Thursday is a Christian feast on the last Thursday before Ash Wednesday. In Poland, the feast usually consists of sweets like Pączki and Angel Wings.
The big difference between Pączki (pronounced Poonch-keys) and regular filled doughnuts are the size and the recipe. Pączki are a litte larger than what you find in the donut shop and the recipe is a little more richer and makes a fluffier result. Every treat is filled and the fillings range from Bavarian Cream to fruit flavors to stewed plum jam and wild rose petal jam.
You can find Pączki in supermarkets like Kroger for a limited time around the Mardi Gras season.
