Valerie White (Queen XVII) says her reign as queen was absolutely wonderful. White has had multiple opportunities to meet fellow members of Mardi Gras royalty from other Krewes in the Shreveport – Bossier area. Additionally, her majesty says having the opportunity for fellowship, and giving back to her community makes the job all worth while. The queen also added the glitz and glamour of the gig is a great added bonus. And the Queen has a very generous heart, besides the philanthropy work she participates in as her role as queen, Valerie created the “Queen V Book Stipend.” A great opportunity for a young girl attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to receive financial aid during her studies.
The show must go on! Although Covid-19 has severely affected the Mardi Gras Season in Louisiana, krewes all over the south are not letting recent circumstances get them down. Although Mardi Gras parade and balls will not take place this year, The Krewe of Sobek have their heads held high. Marquis Hall (King XVII) and Valerie White (Queen XVII) have found alternative ways to celebrate Fat Tuesday with their Krewe.
But it’s not all fun and games.
A few responsibilities Marquis and Valerie have to participate in as King and Queen is attending royalty events including parades, balls, and coronations. When they attend these events their job is to represent the Krewe of Sobek amongst other Northwest Louisiana Mardi Gras krewes. The Krewe of Sobek has also adopted the Boys and Girls Club in Shreveport, Louisiana to change lives by giving their time and money to help transform or make a difference in another person’s life.
So you want to be a Mardi Gras Royalty? Here’s what you have to do.
