‘This Is Us’ exhibition by Ron Brown captures essence, emotion, depth of Black culture

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Photographer Ron Brown visits KSLA’s studio to discuss their upcoming exhibition with ArkLaTex Artistry’s Brittney Hazelton.

On August 21, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., photographer Veronica Ron Brown’s exhibition, This Is Us, will hold a free-to-attend opening reception at the Southern University Museum of Art (SUMAS), 610 Texas Street.

Ron Brown is a Shreveport-based portrait photographer who captures everyday Black life with authenticity, warmth, and depth.

Through these intimate and emotionally rich portraits, Brown honors people, their stories, and the cultural legacy of her community.

“Each image is more than a photograph — it’s a reflection of identity, resilience, and connection," says the SUMAS Facebook event page.

“This Is Us reflects my people, my roots, and the moments that shape us. These pieces carry our laughter, our scars, our beauty, and our truth. Through each image and layer, I’m honoring everyday Black life — the softness, the struggle, the joy, and the sacred. This is not just art. This is US,“ says Ron Brown.

The exhibition uses her portrait work to highlight the beauty and spirit that is often overlooked in mainstream narratives.

“Her lens is both gentle and bold, creating a space where viewers are invited to see—and be seen—with dignity and truth," says SUMAS.
